Miss Ethel Tither has made herself deeply unpopular in the quintessentially English village of Hilary Magna, since she goes out of her way to snoop on people, and interfere with their lives. She is found floating in a cesspool, having been bludgeoned prior to drowning in the drainage water. This is, in every way, a murky business; realising that they are out of their depth, the local police quickly call in the Yard. Inspector Thomas Littlejohn arrives on the train, and in casting around for suspects, he finds that he is spoiled for choice. But he must piece together the clues to discover who was responsible for the death of the busybody.
Death of a Busybody (Audible Audio Edition) George Bellairs Ric Jerrom Isis Publishing Ltd Books
This mystery seems fairly representative of many from the British Golden Age. Originally published in 1943, it is set in a small village plagued by an older woman (the busybody of the title) who butts into the affairs -- business and romantic -- of the other inhabitants. I found the mystery interesting although I'm not sure the reader is given enough information to have a fair shot at guessing the solution. It's to the credit of the Poison Pen Press that they have republished so many long out-of-print British mysteries. The cover designs are first rate and Martin Edwards has done a good job of writing the introductions. But I found it very annoying that the back cover reveals an important plot point that doesn't occur until about two-thirds of the way through the book! It also provides an important clue to unraveling the mystery -- a clue that isn't revealed until the very end of the book. What on earth was whoever wrote the copy for the back cover thinking?

Death of a Busybody (Audible Audio Edition) George Bellairs Ric Jerrom Isis Publishing Ltd Books Reviews
i love british mysteries and thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Just as described.
Another early novelist that should be read if you have the opportunity.
A fine example of a "golden age" whodunit. Settings, characters and plot lines are all enjoyable. It's so good to have these once-rare vintage titles back in print and at affordable prices.
Fun, witty read with good dialog. Not stellar in terms of the mystery itself. You should know my standard for puzzles is the best or even semi-best of the Agatha Christie mysteries, and it's very hard to find a series with that kind of consistently good puzzles that have all the elements needed to figure out the puzzle.
This was an entertaining murder mystery. The local constabulary of Hilary Magna and Hilary Parva as well as Scotland Yard Inspector Littlejohn and his assistant detective Cromwell are well portrayed and delve into a tangled murder mystery. The innocent characters are mostly charming characters so it is a light hearted pleasure to read. I enjoyed this as much as one of Agatha Christie's mysteries.
The author is an amusing writer and includes some humor in his story, which I always enjoy (for instance, Midsomer Murders is a favorite of mine for that very reason).
I have read so many British mysteries and then I discovered George Bellairs thanks to . Have you ever discovered an author that you wish you could write to and let him/she know how much you are enjoying their books? Oh, I so wish I could do that for George Bellairs.
